CYBEX HOME ARC TRAINER - TOTAL BODY 360A
Cybex always insists they have a better idea. We think this time they may be right. Differently than an elliptical, the Cybex arc trainer does more of an skiing type motion which they claim will place less pressure and torque on moving joints while burning more calories. They back up their claim with documented data that has all sorts of fancy graphs and fancy words. Cybex has made a commercial Arc Trainer model for the past 6 years and has earned nothing but more floor space in health clubs and recognized awards. It has earned best product of the year by Fitness Management for the past 2 years. The Cybex Arc Trainer is competing in an elliptical world. Most people shopping for a "crosstrainer" are looking for a machine that follows a running motion. Because the Arc trainer is a different motion, most first time user are very skeptical. However, we notice that the longer you try it, the more you understand it and how it can deliver the results you're looking for.

KEY FEATURES:
The Total Body Home Arc Trainer designed specially for the home - where it is not going to be used 24/7 but where a wide variety of programs, resistance, and intensity is just as important as it is in the gym. The same unique Arc pattern of motion and Same Side Forward (SSF) technology that won "Product of the Year" for the Arc Trainer commercial model is available in the Home Arc Trainer.

CYBEX sees beyond today's trends to deliver a new and honest approach to cross-training - the "right way to work out." The Arc Trainer series was developed with the "correct arc of motion", a user-friendly path that reaches new heights in biomechanics. It delivers a safe, effective workout based on body basics, not fitness fads. The CYBEX Arc Trainer - winner of the "Product of the Year" award two years in a row - is biomechanically suited to the human body - allowing the user to get better results in less time.

  • Resistance range from 0 - 450 watts accommodates a wide variety of users
  • Bilateral reciprocal movement of the footplates along an accurate path offers natural motion for a relaxed feel at low resistance levels and provides high intensity training at high resistance settings.
  • Superior biomechanics allow for high intensity training that places high loads on the muscles with less stress on the joints
  • Four bar linkage input arms keep the footplates at a constant angle with the floor for reduced stress on the foot and ankle.
  • Adjustable incline provides versatility in the patterns of motion. Low inclines provide a gliding action with modest hip and knee motion while higher inclines provide comparable increases in hip and knee range of motion
  • Patent pending Same Side Forward (SSF) motion coordinates the upper and lower body movements and lets the user maintain correct posture at any incline. By bringing the handles forward as the incline increases and maintaining slight plantarflexion at the footplate, the high intensity user can lean forward without putting excess stress on the back.
  • SSF motion also lets the user target either the upper or lower body during the training session (i.e. more work with the arms equals less work for the legs.)
  • Low pivot point on input arms offers a natural and complete range of motion for the shoulder while keeping the wrist in a low stress position.
The Total Arc Trainer packs a punch by combining elements of a climber, cross-trainer & cross-country skiing.
  • Front wheels for easy rolling
  • Wide range of resistance
  • Adjustable incline

Runner World Reviews on their Forum:

Runningfiend .... i love the arc trainer, and personally think it to be a far superior workout to the precor ellipticals at my YMCA...my heart rate can really get up there on the arc trainer, and i think it allows your joints to go through greater ranges of motion--it feels like more of a cross country ski machine in a way...i only do the elliptical if i need a particularly easy w/o to just get the blood flowing, versus on the arc you can do much higher intensity workouts...of course, keep in mind i'm only comparing this to the precor brand of ellipticals...some others out there i think are more challenging. that's just my 2 cents...

Head For the Hills ... I, too, have tried both the arc and elipticals at my YMCA, and I have to say, I'm in LOVE with the arc! Arc trainers force your feet to move in, well, an arc as opposed to an elipse. This, combined with the higher resistance, allows you to simulate hill running easier.

On a side note, whenever I used to use the eliptical, I would get horrible knots in my lower back. Not so with the arc trainer! I think it forces me to stand more upright, whereas the eliptical made me want to lean forward a bit.

Fitness RX Magaxine - Highlighted product April 2005

The CYBEX Arc Trainer and Total Body Arc Trainer have created a new standard for the cardio workout. Research-backed data states that the Arc Trainer is better for your body's movement and comfort, while not over stressing your joints. Ray Giannelli, CYBEX Senior Vice President of Research and Development stated, "The recent study done by the Department of Exercise and Science and Health Promotion at Florida Atlantic University and Kinematix Sports found that as the load increases, the Arc Trainer causes significantly less shear stress to be placed on the knee joint than other similar products. The Arc Trainer is engineered to provide a more vertical posture for reduced compressive loading on the spine and therefore increased user comfort. Additionally, the Arc Trainer allows for a more synchronous motion between the knee and hip so that the two joints work cooperatively. You can get an amazing workout, without worrying about stressing your joints."
